Product Description Almost everyone can sing along with the Beatles, but how many young readers know their whole story? Geoff Edgers, a Boston Globe reporter and hard-core Beatles fan, brings the Fab Four to life in this Who Was...? book. Readers will learn about their Liverpudlian childhoods, their first forays into rock music, what Beatlemania was like, and why they broke up. It's all here in an easy-to-read narrative with plenty of black-and-white illustrations!

NOT Appropriate for Every Child December 13, 2009 K. Jacobsmeyer (Los Angeles, CA USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm amazed that in these reviews, not more was made about the ending chapter in which the author describes the death of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman and that Chapman "heard voices in his head" and was "mentally ill." My seven year old son has autism and loves, loves, loves The Beatles. I wanted to get him a book that was at his reading level and after reading the glowing reviews by parents of kids as young as six, I was sure this would be ideal. But I would not buy this item for any child with developmental disabilities. The last thing I want my child to worry about is if his autism would connect in any way to Mark David Chapman and his mental instability. It would've been better had the author just wrote that Lennon died and was shot - in the same way he described Harrison's death, which was due to cancer. I don't mind explaining to my child what the world is comprised of, good and bad, but this book takes how I would like that to go out of my hands. So no, I will be returning this item or reselling.

a kid's review November 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The book "who were the Beatles?" is a biography about the Beatles. The story is about four guys from Liverpool, England and how they became world famous stars. The main characters are Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They played in clubs, bars, and then one day one man named Brian Epstein asked them to play their first concert in Hamburg, Germany. The Beatles ran into a few problems like fighting over songs. Paul is my favorite Beatle because he is the lead singer and guitarist.
I can relate to the feelings of success. When I learn a song without the book on my guitar, I feel successful. I like the book because it is about a band and I want to be in a band.
I like the book because all the characters were interesting. My favorite part of the book is when John gets shot, it was exciting but sad.
I would recommend this book to people who like a little suspense and history.
My 6 y.o. loves this book! September 9, 2008 H. Weeks (Yorktown Heights, NY USA) Everyone in my family is a Beatles fan. Our 6 y.o. daughter does not know life without the Beatles. We decided to buy her this book, so she could read up on them. This book relates on a child's level the story of the Fab Four from when they were children. I loved it so much that I ordered more copies to donate to my daughter's elementary school library, 1st grade classroom library, and I plan to order another for her 2nd grade library. This should be on every child's reading list.
