    Editorial Reviews:

    Product Description
From listening to his grandmother recite epic poems from memory to curling up in bed while his father read funny verses, award-winning actor John Lithgow grew up with poetry. Ever since, John has been an enthusiastic seeker of poetic experience, whether reading, reciting, or listening to great poems.

The wide variety of carefully selected poems in this book provides the perfect introduction to appeal to readers new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Dylan Thomas are just a few names among Lithgow's comprehensive list of poetry masters. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud." This unique package provides a multimedia poetry experience with a bonus MP3 CD of revelatory poetry readings by John and the familiar voices of such notable performers as Eileen Atkins, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, Billy Connolly, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Lynn Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, Gary Sinise, and Sam Waterston.

Every reader will enjoy reciting or listening to these poems with the entire family, appreciating how each one comes to life through the spoken word in this superlative poetry collection.

Good poetry paints pictures and evokes powerful emotions. It draws in readers and listeners reminding us that it is truly a beautiful art form. The poems chosen in John Litgow's book are classics and should inspire any poet to create great works of their own.

5 out of 5 stars The Poet's Corner is a great selection!   May 4, 2009

I first found out about this book when I watched Bill Moyers interview John Lithgow about it. It sounded like a really nice collection of poems and John Lithgow has such an obvious passion for poetry, I really wanted to get it. It's everything I hoped it would be. There is a little bit of biographical and background information on each poem and John Lithgow offers his comments on how he responds to each one. He also makes recommendations for other poems by the same author. It is an eclectic mixture of poems and there really is something for everyone. It makes poetry accessible and enjoyable. The readings of the poems on the MP3 by various actors are so well done! I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars John Lithgow is a master at collecting and reading poetry.   April 30, 2009

This book is one to keep for a long time as it shows the broad side to John Lithgow's many talents, including interpreting and analyzing the poems for the reader. The accompanying CD is wonderful also.
