Amazon.com Review Wanting to understand the most fundamental questions of the universe isn't the province of ivory-tower intellectuals alone, as this book's enormous popularity has demonstrated. A young girl, Sophie, becomes embroiled in a discussion of philosophy with a faceless correspondent. At the same time, she must unravel a mystery involving another young girl, Hilde, by using everything she's learning. The truth is far more complicated than she could ever have imagined.
Product Description Discovering two thought-provoking philosophical questions in her mailbox, Sophie enrolls in a correspondence course with a mysterious philosopher and begins to receive some equally unusual letters. Reprint.

Philosophy for the curious June 7, 2009 Al Newman (Minneapolis, MN) Excellent read...a journey through Western philosophy through the story of a young girl. This is a phenomenal way to experience philosophy for the first time. Gaarder's ideas are easily accessible and encourages us to explore the world of rationalism and empiricism even further.
Introduction to history as well June 7, 2009 JoJoreviews 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wonderfully creative and easy to understand introduction to philosophy. Just as strong however, is the historical time line. I wish it had been around when I was a teen. Since I never had a philosophy course ( or world history for that matter ), this was a wonderful read for me. The suspenseful plot makes it a page-turner that one cannot put down. Thank you, Mr. Gaarder! P.S. Now almost 20 years after the book was written, there is much new scientific awareness, especially in regards to animals' capacity for thought. Some of the text might need to be changed if re-written today.

Sophie's World Review April 28, 2009 Jeshua H. 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sophie's World is the best book I have ever read. It caught my attention from the very first chapter. This is the perfect kind of book for people like me because I'm not a fan of texts books but in this book you learn history and you have a great story in the same book! One of the few things I disliked about this book was the amount of pages that it spent talking just about Christianity and even though I understand that it was linked to the material I believe the author could've left some of those parts out. Other than that, TERREFIC book!!
worst book i've read April 16, 2009 Ann Louise Bastian 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book was terrible! I actually enjoy philosophy but even the philosophic parts were terrible. This book was incredibly slow and dry and the plot was ridiculous. I can see what the author was trying to get at but it was just completely awful, if i could give this book negative stars i would.
