2 out of 5 stars Growing Up Without the Beatles   April 26, 2009

This book should be titled "Growing Up without the Beatles," since the author actually states his distaste for the group. At one point he even calls the "Rubber Soul" cover creepy. He came around to liking them, since in 1976 (when he wrote the book) the concept of a teens' life paralled with the Beatles was still an original enough concept. At least original enough to get a published book/money out of. I have to admit it has some nice photos throughout, although the overall quality of the book is cheap. The book is nothing but the author's ego-trip. I say, don't waste your time.

I received this book as a gift and it is something I treasure today. The author does a very nice job of depicting his growth alongside of the Beatles' music and arrival in America. I like the way Mr. Schaumberg shows how the Beatles became fixtures in his school, e.g., Beatle-themed sketches for school shows, parodies of their songs and the way many kids emulated their hair and clothing styles. It was a fun trip down Memory (Penny) Lane and Mr. Schaumberg is to be commended for bringing the reader into the world that was largely influenced by the Beatles.
