3 out of 5 stars photos and fluff interviews, but really really fun   September 25, 2007

This is a book about the Stones that for the most part was completed by 1972. That is, in my opinion, just after the group had peaked and was becoming mediocre and continuing more on momentum than musical innovation (and of course, youth). They are now a canned act.

I spent many hours - and occasionally still do - poring over the pictures of the Stones and their groupies, reading bits here and there, but mostly just looking. The pictures are spectacular and wonderfully edited: they are the core of this book. (Oddly, there are also music scores in the back.)

The articles and interviews are superficial, more image management junk but there are a few revealing moments. They are written in the style that was developed by Rolling Stone magazine, a kind of rock celebrity worship that offers a few ideas but basically is written by people who want to take part in the whole thing. Thus, the writers are essentially groupies living out their own fantasies.

But what can you say? This is the stuff of adolescent dreams and I loved to look at the womanising, decadent, and drug-worn rockers within. It is pure entertainment and good at it. That is what this book is.
