    Product Description

“There were times I was a bit reticent in taking out my camera, like when some ‘old friends’ stopped by to hang out. I didn’t want to intrude on these moments, but John insisted. He felt that I captured him in ways that no one else did because of his comfort level with me…For years, only my closest friends got to see these photos—which were literally tucked away in a shoebox in my closet. They were surprised that these images did not convey the John that was portrayed in the press during our time together. In fact, they saw a side of John seldom seen.”—From INSTAMATIC KARMA

John Lennon is the most famously photographed Beatle—everyone from Iain MacMillian to Annie Lebowitz took iconic images of him—but there have never been pictures of him like these taken by May Pang, Lennon’s girlfriend from 1973 to 1975. In INSTAMATIC KARMA, they’re collected for the first time. With very few exceptions, these photos are that rare thing: never-before-seen images of an icon. The photos here show Lennon in a variety of settings: at work, at play, at home, and away. They show a playful Lennon, a casual, unguarded Lennon; they’re the kind of photos one lover takes of another. May has written rich captions to accompany her photos--taken together, they tell a simple story of the time May and Lennon spent together; a time, according to legend, when Lennon was unhappy and unproductive, estranged from his family and bandmates. Pang’s photos clearly tell another story—they show Lennon clowning around, working on his hit album “Walls and Bridges”, embracing old friends and family, hanging out in their apartment on Manhattan’s East 52nd Street, relaxing in the country in upstate New York or spending peaceful days swimming in the waters of Long Island.

The photographs in INSTAMATIC KARMA are both color and black & white, casual Polaroids and more composed shots. Each one is an intimate glimpse into a fascinating time in John Lennon’s life.

5 out of 5 stars John and May   December 27, 2009
    Si Raja Iwan Fals (USA)
Good book on the whole: an intimate, relaxed, happy John Lennon. The emphasis is on the photos, and there are some truly intriguing ones: John and Paul hanging out together; John signing the legal paperwork to dissolve the Beatles partnership. Fascinating stuff.

Also fascinating is just how happy Lennon seems -- a huge contrast to the "Lost Weekend" period described by John when he and Yoko were promoting Double Fantasy 5 years later. Since his death, Yoko (and yes-man Elliot Mintz) have set this "Lost Weekend" story firmly in stone: that John was hopelessly "lost at sea" without Yoko. I'm not so sure. This book shows a very creative John, restoring old friendships, seeing his son Julian again (after 4 years!), plus little gems like John sending May to Beatle conventions to buy up all copies of Two Virgins to try and "get it out of circulation".

Most telling for me is the UK "Imagine" single, which was released (off the Shaved Fish LP) on May's birthday in 1975 and features one of May's best photos as the cover. Yet speaking in 1980, with Yoko at his side, John was curiously "blank on why that would have happened"... when asked about the 4-year gap between recording and release.

This isn't to say that John didn't love Yoko, I'm sure he did, but it's clear from these pictures that John's time with May was loving too. Dare I say it, I think they were actually quite liked as a couple... (after all it was May and not Yoko who was invited to attend Linda's New York memorial in 1998).

The actual repro in the book perhaps isn't the greatest quality, and some of the photos look a little too retouched, or colour-corrected, but it's a minor criticism for what is really such a warm and touching collection. With John's legacy so firmly under Yoko's control, books like this help redress the balance.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow   December 23, 2009
    J.K.M. (Perth, Australia)
I was very young when John Lennon was killed, and I am quite the Beatles fan. Therefore, it still gives me great joy to find out that there are many stories unwritten about John Lennon post Beatles that is worth sharing with us. This is what May Pang has done. Forget the sensationalism, forget the media portrayals. John Lennon. The Man.

I must admit, I have never heard of May Pang before (seeing as I live in Australia), so I was not familiar with her. This meant that I had no pre-conceived ideas about what she brought to the table, and what I was to expect. There was no bad word about anybody in the book. It's great to know John Lennon loved his Beatles brothers post break up.

Admittedly, it is not the best of photography from a photographer buff's point of view, but who cares!!! She has managed to capture the essence of Lennon, which we are thankful has not been eradicated by film erosion!

Thank you for letting us into your world!

    I enjoyed it!

Oh, wow - grainy, out of focus, underexposed snapshots. A handful of good ones, no surprises. Disappointing.
