Product Description
Hollywood, California: three gruesome deaths within two weeks and every one of them a major star - an Oscar winner, an ingenue, and an action hero. A serial killer is working through the Hollywood A-list and celebrities are running scared.
Each crime scene is worthy of a classic horror movie, and all three victims share a connection to the powerful scream queen, Ovsanna Moore. The stunning and formidable Moore is the legendary head of a Hollywood studio, as well as the writer and star of seventeen blockbuster horror films (and a few that went straight to DVD).
She’s also a 500 year old vampyre… but this is Hollywood after all, and no one ever looks their age.
Beverly Hills Police Detective Peter King knows a lot about the City of Angels, but he certainly doesn’t know that most of the famous actors in town are actually an established network of vampires. Or that secretive and seductive Ovsanna Moore happens to be their CEO.
Moore and King may be from opposite sides of the Hollywood Hills, but both have something to gain by stopping the killer who the tabloids have dubbed the Cinema Slayer. Ovsanna must protect her vampire legacy and her production schedule, while King just wants to keep his Beverly Hills beat as blood-free as possible. But when the horror queen and the cop with the movie star looks form an unholy alliance, sparks fly and so do the creatures of the night.
Film, television and Broadway star Adrienne Barbeau and New York Times bestselling author Michael Scott have teamed up to deliver this sexy, scary, and deliciously clever novel full of Hollywood glamour, behind-the-scenes secrets, and the truly bloodthirsty reality of Tinseltown. So grab some popcorn and some holy water and lose yourself in the high-stakes, back-stabbing world of the Vampyres of Hollywood. |

This was just FUN. April 28, 2009 Oooolookie I didn't have high expecttions for this book, but I picked it up because it's received pretty good ratings all over. I'm glad I did. Folks, if you came to this book looking for "literature", you came to the wrong place. This is just fun, through and through. It's pretty gory; I'd describe it as less Stephen King and more Charlaine Harris (True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse), but the style is all their own. The characters were well-fleshed (no pun intended), the dialogue crisp and believable, the story inventive, and the writing tight and fast-paced. Let me put it this way: the first thing I did when I finished it ten minutes ago was hit the web looking for news of a sequel. I didn't find any, but I'll keep an eye open.
Pretty bad January 27, 2009 D. Vann 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Starts well, but then it is poorly written. The constant name dropping of famous characters is annoying, the situations risible, the attempts to describe historical facts really bad (like "something the moors designed in Spain 200 years ago"? hello? they were completely gone in 1492, make it more like 900 years ago), the characters are flat caricatures.... I am giving up on it.
"A good book doesn't stay with you" January 1, 2009 Popin (Canada) I use to love reading celebrity gossip and I do love reading vampire novels, so I knew that Vampyres of Hollywood would be a fun read for me. And it was. Till I finished the novel, then I was left with a feeling that it was a fun read, but I didn't really want to pick up the book again, nor did I remember what happened in most of the book...it's hard to explain, but bear with me as I try to make sense of this. The overall story is gossipy goodness and it seemed like I was reading a celebrity memoir of some sorts. Ovsanna would mention what she did on set, who the other vampires of Hollywood are including the famous Charlie Chaplin, and the vampire community as a whole. She also tells us about her fabulous life as a third generation Hollywood star. Even though she's each generation and she's simply "killed" her old self and emerged from some European country as the daughter of the deceased star, who is actually her. All this is interesting. And the plot is too, though that wraps up really fast and the reveal of who the killer really is, isn't all that surprising, nor did I care who it really was. It didn't really matter to me, since I felt like the book was more about Ovsanna's world, then the actual plot of the vampires being killed. While I liked how each chapter changed from Ovsanna's point of view to Peter's, my only complaint was Ovsanna's assistant. I wanted to learn more about her, but I never got it. Also, the relationship between Ovsanna and Peter seems to be there for the sake of being there. I never felt the attraction between the two. However, it never deterred from the main story and for that, I am thankful. But, after all that and seeing the final resolution of the vampire killings, I'm left with a feeling of, "Well that was a fun read...what happened in it again?" It's been a few weeks since I've read this book and even now, I remember that I it was a fun fluffy read, but nothing held my attention when I was done. A good book doesn't stay with you. If that makes any sense. This is a weird review and I apologize for it, because I know I should be saying more, but I just can't think of anything to say about this book. No, that isn't true. It does have a very eye catching cover.
More like 4 1/2 stars... December 21, 2008 Deborah Wiley (Winter Haven, FL) A serial killer is stalking Hollywood's celebrities and Beverly Hills Detective Peter King is determined to solve the case. The crimes are vicious in their intensity and the only common link Peter can see is Ovsanna Moore, the Scream Queen of horror flicks and majority owner of Anticipation Studios. Ovsanna sees another link however: all of the dead celebrities are vampyres, ones created specifically by her. Who is slaying the VAMPYRES OF HOLLYWOOD? Adrienne Barbeau and Michael Scott collaborate to create a stunning twist on an old theme. Vampires, or vampyres as they are called in VAMPYRES OF HOLLYWOOD, have been drastically overused in both the movies and novels. Adrienne Barbeau and Michael Scott use this to their full advantage, however. After all, what is more appropriate than to find there is actually a vampyre running Hollywood and that many actors/actresses are vampyres? Even better, the authors delve into the lore of old Hollywood as we see familiar actors and actresses, long past, in their current lives as vampyres. The story alternates viewpoints, as it's told entirely in first person from the perspectives of both Ovsanna and Peter. The back and forth narration flows smoothly and gives the reader insight that each of the individual characters doesn't have. The concept is brilliant and works to perfection! VAMPYRES OF HOLLYWOOD is not for the squeamish. From practically the first page, the brutality of the killings is described. The details aren't gratuitous but rather lead up to the clever and oh so surprising twist at the end of the tale. Many of the vampyre myths and legends are reexamined as Adrienne Barbeau and Michael Scott are a breath of fresh air to the genre. Let's just hope there are more novels forthcoming as the collaboration between these two authors definitely is a hit! COURTESY OF BOOK ILLUMINATIONS
