January 15, 2008: Andrew Morton uncovers the true story of the biggest celebrity of our age.
Everyone knows Tom Cruise---or at least what he wants us to know. We know that he overcame a difficult childhood to star in astonishing array of blockbusters: Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Interview with the Vampire, Jerry Maguire, three Mission: Impossible movies, War of the Worlds, and more. We know he has taken artistic chances, too, and as a result has earned three Academy Award nominations and three Golden Globes, along with the respect of acting legends like Paul Newman and Dustin Hoffman. After that, the picture becomes a little less clear. We know that Tom is a Scientologist, but not necessarily what that means in his life. We know that, despite persistent rumors about his sexuality, he has been married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes. But it was not until the spring of 2005, when he jumped on Oprah’s couch to proclaim his love for Katie and denounced Brooke Shields for turning to the “Nazi science” of psychiatry, that we began to realize how much we didn’t know about the charming, hardworking star. For two years, award-winning biographer Andrew Morton has been tirelessly seeking out everyone from former teachers and girlfriends to Scientology insiders to friends who have watched a once-bullied, “nothing special” outsider transform himself into an icon Forbes has called the most powerful celebrity in the world Here, with never-seen photos and never-heard revelations, is a riveting, sometimes shocking portrait of the real Tom Cruise---his work, his love life, his marriages, his religion---from a master at uncovering the true story behind the public face of celebrity.

Aspects June 15, 2009 JohnA37 (Brisbane, Australia) I got the book fairly early and was pleasantly surprised. It was far more than a hatchet job on Tommy and is worth reading in its entirety. Especially because it does a great job of showing how 'current Tom' is *not* just the Scientology product. Everything he is now he was before; back to childhood. The worst thing about the Scientology influence is that it offered Cruise a 'philosophical basis' for character deficiencies that otherwise might have been softened or 'corrected' by real life. Scientology didn't *make* Tom Cruise what he is, but, it gave him an excuse to reinforce some of the worst aspects.
I am an Ex-scn/Ex-staff and Andrew's scn parts are true! June 15, 2009 Shipper 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I didn't read this book till just a week ago because I had no interest in reading about Tom Cruise! But when I picked it up on clearance and thumbed to the second half and saw how the author was being REAL and telling TRUTHS about what scn is like, I snapped it up and didn't put it down till I finished it! And all I gotta say is: WOW! I learned sooooo many details that I'd never known but suspected regarding Tom's involvement in scn. Every word of what Andrew prints about Scn and its effects on Celebs and anyone for that matter, are true! I know some of the people who gave some of the stories and info in the book, and it was refreshing to see a book so well-written about this dangerous cult! You see, celebs are treated differently in scn than the 'average person'. They are coddled, cossetted, literally are not allowed to be looked at or talked to by scn staff or its public members. Like Andrew said, they are watched and/or 'recovered' in the most elaborate of ways to ensure they stay in the fold and keep contributing millions of dollars and tons of new recruits. Reading this book shed soooo much more light for me and has helped THIS ex-member that much more, thank YOU, Andrew! :)
Fun Read! May 14, 2009 Kristen Lopez (Rocklin, California United States) I was a bit skeptical in reading this because I figured it would give a Cliff's Notes version of Tom Cruise, it doesn't. Andrew Morton goes into great detail on Cruise's childhood and rise to fame that gives fans old and new great insight. It doesn't give real juicy secrets so fans of debating the actor's sexuality will be a bit disappointed, nor does it give in-depth theories on his marriage to Katie Holmes. It gives some wonderful detail about the religion of Scientology and Cruise's place in it which was the best aspect of the book. A fun read, definitely one worth exploring!
This is an important book March 19, 2009 tlkwrite (Iowa) This is an important book, not because it is about Tom Cruise, but because it gives a detailed and researched explanation of Scientology. Maybe the U.S. government should investigate the practices which causes people to sign a contract giving up their rights. The entertainment unions have a responsibility to educate their members about how Scientology targets people in the entertainment industry. According to the book, Scientology gets people to tell them their innermost secrets and then uses that information to blackmail or bribe people. The Scientologists who recruit get paid lifetime commissions. This is an amazing story. When I picked it up I didn't thing I would like it but I found it fascinating. I'm really glad I took time to listen to the book on CD. I'm very grateful to the author. It needed to be written. Now, who will make the movie?
Interesting February 24, 2009 Yousef Y. Mohsen (Kuwait) I bought this book because I was interested to know more about scientology and I ended up more interested in Tom's life and work. Some how this book will make more interested in Tom's movies although the book is set to criticize the Man's life and his faith. Its a good read
