This particular book gives you insight of why there are ushers with scripture backups. I consider this a good choice as well.
Not what I had hoped... September 23, 2006 Chad Oberholtzer (Boalsburg, PA, USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
As the staff member at our church responsible to provide leadership to our various First Impressions teams, which includes the ushers, I had hoped that this would be a resource that I could purchase for each of our ushers as a means of training them for their role. However, I was disappointed to the extent that I won't be purchasing it for my usher teams.
The book does a solid job of laying out the biblical foundations for the role of ushers, and I will surely borrow some of those points to communicate as an inspiration and challenge to our ushers. And there are a number of helpful lists that provide a broad spectrum of tasks that ushers may do.
However, I was disappointed that more care was not given to discuss difficult issues like what to do with screaming children or what to do in the event of a crisis in the worship room. Rather than providing suggestions for what an usher might do in the event of an emergency, the author simply states that a church needs to have an emergency plan in place. It would be more helpful to hear about specific plans that churches have used to deal with these rather thorny issues.
It is an appropriate length, as it can be read within an hour or so.
Appendix 2, "Resources for the Offering," seems like a very strange addendum to this book, as I have never known an usher who was responsible to pray for the offering. This almost seemed like filler material to make the book seem more substantial.
The book is at its best when describing why ushering is a vital ministry in the church. I had hoped for a more helpful how-to guide. There is good stuff, to be sure, but I wish that the entire book had been less generic.
