Product Description When George Klein was an eighth grader at Humes High, he couldn’t have known how important the new kid with the guitar—the boy named Elvis—would later become in his life. But from the first time GK (as he was nicknamed by Elvis) heard this kid sing, he knew that Elvis Presley was someone extraordinary. During Elvis’s rise to fame and throughout the wild swirl of his remarkable life, Klein was a steady presence and one of Elvis’s closest and most loyal friends until his untimely death in 1977.
In Elvis: My Best Man, a heartfelt, entertaining, and long-awaited contribution to our understanding of Elvis Presley and the early days of rock ’n’ roll, George Klein writes with great affection for the friend he knew—about who the King of Rock ’n’ Roll really was and how he acted when the stage lights were off. This fascinating chronicle of boundary-breaking and music-making through one of the most intriguing and dynamic stretches of American history overflows with insights and anecdotes from someone who was in the middle of it all. From the good times at Graceland to hanging out with Hollywood stars to butting heads with Elvis’s iron-handed manager, Colonel Tom Parker, to making sure that Elvis’s legacy is fittingly honored, GK was a true friend of the King and a trailblazer in the music industry in his own right.

Confirmation of the Uniqueness of Elvis February 7, 2010 R. Spell (Memphis, TN USA) Ok, there is not a lot of new here but you are hearing it from the ultimate insider although I will admit I liked Jerry Schilling's book better as well as the very old, controversial Red West book and of course Priscilla's book. But George Klein is a local legend in Memphis in his own right and the Memphis/Elvis story would not be complete without a read of his book partly because Klein can give you a first hand account of Elvis in high school. While the book doesn't offer a lot new, it does offer some. Elvis was the "go between" for Elvis to local dates including the late Gail Stanton who is mentioned here as well as others. Probably the most surprising revelation was that Elvis had had a mini-face lift. He died at 42. Did he really need one? Overall, a light remembrance that is pleasent but not earth shattering. Worth the read of this local celebrity, George Klein.
TOTAL DISAPOINTMENT February 7, 2010 Jean S. Hammond Was very excited to receive Klein's book. I was hoping for some new and exciting stories from Klein's relationship with the king, but alas same old self-absorbed stories about the author....nothing new, perfect sleep aid.........
My favorite book! February 6, 2010 SPT (Little Rock, AR) I admit, I don't read alot of books. But when I started reading "Elvis, My Best Man", I could not stop until I read all of it. and then, I was wishing there was more. It grabbed me even before it got started and never let go. One of my all time favorites...the book and the man!
Disappointing February 4, 2010 Elizabeth Clifford (norfolk, VA) Same old, same old. Nothing new here except the self important stories of the author. After reading Alanna Nash's book, Baby Let's Play House, this one fell flat. Very one dimensional. YAWN.
Nice Read February 3, 2010 E. Lazenby (New York) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you read a lot of Elvis books like I did some of what you read here is nothing new. It's nice to read about George's relationship with Elvis and his part in Elvis history. Nice read on George's music business history and the lessons he's learned. This shows yet more examples of Elvis's friendship and generosity that we so love about him.
